S3B What Secondary General Education Pre-Service Teachers can teach us about supporting Students' Transition to College

Abstract

Responding to a local community need, pre-service teachers in their Inclusive Education course created an interactive image virtual field trip for high school students with disabilities. With guidance from ID&D and students' own initiatives, multiple videos were created on skills needed for a successful transition to the college environment. When we shared this interactive image with our Maryland school partners, we were immediately praised for this unique and beneficial resource. This original class project has developed into multiple extensions including an IRB approved study to understand the perceived usefulness and accessibility of the interactive image, accepted conference presentation at premier special education organization, and expansion of the interactive image with additional sections of the Inclusive Education course. This presentation will provide a brief overview of how this innovative teaching strategy was developed with high impact practices and how to promote student engagement through their own leadership.
