S15B Utilizing Multimodal Literacies to Strengthen Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Abstract

A core tenant of UDL is to support learner agency through multiple means of engagement throughout the design of a course. However, UDL guidelines don’t explain how to effectively create, curate, and deliver instructional materials through varied forms of engagement. Many instructors utilize multimodal instructional techniques to support this need, providing instruction in a variety of modes (e.g. oral, textual, visual) but multimodal instruction increases in complexity as new tools and technologies are used. Multimodal literacy helps inform how, why, and where multimodality is used, based on social and disciplinary contexts. In this session, I will define and expand upon key aspects of multimodal literacy and how such aspects can be utilized to support meaningful learning opportunities for students. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own multimodal practices and consider how to support student meaning making in their classrooms by recognizing the affordances and limitations of the communicative modes they utilize to create and manage student learning opportunities.
