S15A Bridging the Proficiency Gap: Integrating Microsoft Teams into Classrooms for Real-World Learning

Abstract

With over 300 million users in 2023, Microsoft Teams is a widely adopted tool across professional organizations requiring significant technical proficiency. Students, recent graduates, and others unfamiliar with the tool might experience steep learning curves, potentially reducing productivity within a system designed for efficiency. The proficiency gap may stem from classroom experiences relying heavily on streamlined learning management systems (such as MyClasses), created to minimize obstacles rather than build the adaptive skills necessary in dynamic environments. To address this gap, classrooms might integrate Microsoft Teams – for free – directly into their learning management systems.

This session explores Microsoft Teams as an experiential learning tool for learning, beyond standard live meeting capabilities. Key elements include using channels for teamwork, student-created file management strategies, tagging for efficient communication, monitoring engagement via data analytics, and integrating apps, among other features. The presentation explores the technology’s benefits and drawbacks and cites students’ experiences across three undergraduate courses.

With greater adoption of the tool, instructors can foster essential skills for digital collaboration, task and time management, adaptability, digital etiquette, problem-solving, written communication, and leadership.
