Abstract

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is reshaping the landscape of many disciplines, including higher education. Both students and professors increasingly turn to AI to enhance learning, increase productivity, streamline administrative tasks, and support research endeavors. However, this growth also raises critical questions about the ethical use of these tools, particularly when considering higher education student populations, including international students. The ethical integration of AI in education is essential for academic integrity, equity, and meaningful learning experiences for higher education students.

Organized by the Teaching with International Students (TwINS) Faculty Learning Community, this panel will explore the opportunities and challenges AI tools present in higher education, focusing on their application and impact on teaching and learning for both domestic and international students. It will feature four panelists with diverse perspectives based on their research and practical experience with AI in the college classroom from both instructors’ and students’ perspectives.

Panelists will share their experiences and lessons learned from their teaching, and results from their research on the impact of AI on HE students’ completion of academic tasks and their academic performance, international students’ uses and perspectives of AI tools in academic writing and other tasks, and approaches and strategies to teaching students about the responsible and ethical uses of AI. The panel aims to provide insights for SU faculty and administrators and foster discussions on the experiences and perspectives of the audience in addressing the ethical uses of AI in their classes with domestic and international students. The last 5-10 minutes of the panel will be reserved for Q&A with the audience.
