S5 Enhancing Student Critical Thinking Through the Ethical Use of AI Tools

Abstract

The use of AI in higher education is a subject that is widely debated, with some academics preferring to ban or avoid the use of AI completely, while others are adopting a more permissive and accepting perspective. AI is being adopted by society more and more every day and we, the workshop facilitators, feel that it is our responsibility to teach students how to utilize these tools in an ethically responsible way that promotes critical thinking skills.

Within the School of Social Work, various faculty are exploring ways to incorporate the use of AI technologies to enhance student learning and increase the critical analysis skills necessary for long-term success within the profession. This workshop will provide an overview of one of the ways faculty within the School of Social Work are incorporating AI technology, specifically, the ethical and responsible use of ChatGPT as a tool in preparing treatment goals and objectives while maintaining a human-centric approach. Within this workshop, participants from any discipline will have the opportunity to discuss the ways in which they might present the ethical use of this technology to their students, as well as the opportunity to practice using it in real-time.
