Abstract

This presentation aims to discuss the Latin American and Latinx Symposium at SU as a pedagogical tool to promote a space for student holistic wellness and sense of mattering, as well as its challenges, and future plans. The event features students’ cross-disciplinary research and artistic projects, fostering relevant conversations on culture, cinema, history, indigeneity, race, politics, etc. It, meaningfully, strengths students and instructors' intellectual connections, while bridging collaborations between students and the Spanish speaking community. For The annual SU Teaching and Learning Conference, we propose to reflect upon the pedagogical strategies for scaffolding and orienting the development of students' critical thinking, intercultural competences, creativity, and oral skills. We will present evidence on how the event uses innovative teaching strategies focused on non-traditional assignments, assessment beyond the classroom, and enduring and compelling final outcomes.
