S5A Experiential Learning during COVID: Lessons learned from Internships, Projects, and Networking

Abstract

At the same time that nonprofit organizations are operating with limited capacity, they have adjusted to an increased demand for their services and to being creative with fundraising events. If this different scenario has not completely deterred experiential learning for SU students, it has certainly changed it. For example, internships through AmeriCorps and through some majors have continued either virtually or in person, following strict guidelines of social distancing. 100-450-hour internships are not the only way to connect our students with the local community though. Other options, such as integrating meaningful projects in SU courses, can help support the nonprofit sector while developing networking skills and hands-on experience for our students. Examples on how students in Sociology have completed their internship hours and how students in one of the COMM 490 Senior Seminar (Applying your skills to public service) have integrated specific projects that support the mission of local nonprofits during this past year are discussed in this presentation.
